How to Keep Animals and Pests Out of Your Shed

Garden sheds are often used to store tools, lawn furniture, and other items. Unfortunately, they can also be attractive to animals and pests looking for a place to hide or build a nest. To keep animals and pests from invading your shed, there are a few steps you can take.

1. Install a durable door

Make sure the door you choose is strong and sturdy enough to keep animals and pests from entering. You should also look for a door that has a good seal, so there are no gaps around the frame.

2. Use weather stripping

Weather stripping is a great way to help keep pests and animals out of your shed. It’s an inexpensive and easy solution that will help to seal any cracks and gaps in the door or walls.  It involves adding a rubber or foam strip along the edges of the door or windows to prevent animals and pests from entering.

3. Use screens

Screens are a great way to keep animals and pests from entering your shed through windows or vents. Make sure the screens are made of a durable material and fit securely in the window or vent.  You can install them yourself or hire a professional to do the job.

4. Clean the area

Animals and pests are attracted to food and debris, so make sure to keep your shed clean and free of any food or debris. Regularly sweep and vacuum the area, and if you have a lawn mower, make sure to empty the bag after each use.

5. Use a repellent

You can also use a natural repellent to help keep animals and pests away. Options include peppermint oil, mothballs, and citrus-scented sprays. These repellents should be sprayed around the outside of the shed and reapplied regularly.

6. Seal all openings

Check the walls and roof of your shed for any potential openings, such as holes or cracks. If you find any, use caulk or expanding foam to seal them. This will help to prevent animals and pests from getting in and nesting.

7. Install a light

Installing a light outside your shed will help to deter animals and pests from entering. Motion-activated lights are a great option, as they will turn on if any movement is detected.
