Sheds are great for storing tools, and gardening equipment, or as an extension of your home such as a home office. But when you have decided to incorporate a shed onto your property, you will quickly realise that there are quite a few options out there, ranging from small portable sheds to large secured structures.
Sheds serve different purposes and therefore also come in a range of materials. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, and choosing the correct one depends on your needs. Here are some of the most common materials used.
Wooden Sheds
This is an obvious and classic choice. Wood is aesthetically appealing, very strong material and customisable as you can paint it to match the style and design of your house.
However, wood is an expensive option, and susceptible to weather damage and insect infestation.
Vinyl Sheds
The terms resin or plastic is interchangeable. This is a popular choice among those choosing the DIY route as it’s easy to install and maintain. Vinyl is lightweight, durable, and also relatively inexpensive, making it a great choice for smaller projects.
The downside is that it doesn’t look nearly as good and sophisticated as wood or steel, but if you want something quick and cheap, it’s a perfect choice.
Metal Sheds
Made from either steel or galvanised aluminium, metal outdoor sheds provide durability at a very cost-effective price. It is the ideal choice for storage purposes. Steel sheds tend to come in a variety of styles, sizes and colour to suit a range of tastes and budgets and offer many benefits:
- No blistering or cracking
- Lower cost compared to wood
- No splitting due to frost
- No swelling or warping
- No damage from insects or pests
- No painting
- Very little maintenance
- Fire resistant
The disadvantage is that metal is susceptible to rusting and denting.
When selecting a material consider the size, what you will use it for and where it will be located on your property.
